project 53; Fluorescent lights

daylight white balance.

Auto white balance

Fluorescent white balance. Very little difference between this and the previous one.

Fluorescent white balance. I am not sure about these particular lights, the fluorescent white balance here is giving a red cast.

Auto white balance.

day light white balance.

Auto white balance, a little blueish.
Daylight white balance, green.
Fluorescent white balance, neutral.

project 52; Tungsten light and tungsten balance

I think the interesting thing about this project is that the orange effect of tungsten lighting can be useful in some photographs and not in others.

The best of this series is the third one, the exposure is right for the subject, the light source is overexposed. The next shot is o.k too. This problem of showing the light source and the subject is found in outdoor lighting too, like on a cloudy day where the luminance of the sky is much greater than the ground.

daylight, tungsten, tungsten with flash. I prefer the last one.

white balance on daylight and then on tungsten. I prefer the first one, it looks more like a wine cellar.

The first in this series is the closest to neutral, it is the highest shutter speed of the series with flash. As the exposure times get longer the colour starts to turn slightly orange.
The above were taken using a flash with the white balance on tungsten..

All of the above were taken with no flash and the white balance on tungsten.

The above were taken with daylight white balance.

Project 51; Tungsten lights

I used a hand held meter set for ISO 400, aperture 1.0. There was insufficient light to shoot hand held, even very close to the light source the fastest shutter speed available was 1/50th of a second. To get close to a safe hand held speed I had to change the ISO 1000 and still the best I could do was 1/60th of a second. The colour is obviously orange and lighting levels drop of very fast as you move away from the light source.

Assignment 2: Colour. Review and feedback.

Overall the feedback was very positive on this assignment. My tutor asks me to reconsider photo number 2 and try more imaginative compositions. In hindsight I agree with him and would have submitted a different photo for this.

Either this;

or this;

Both show complimentary colours and are more interesting photographs. What I think the process of actually sitting down and looking back over these tutor reports makes me realise is that I need to work on critiquing my own work. So far in nearly every review I have done I have had at least one photo that I did not submit that was stronger than one I did submit.

For this photo above his remarks were very encouraging but he mentioned he thought that this was a better photo;
Looking back now I think I was caught up in the relationship of the intensities of red and yellow and trying to get the ratios to each other to look right. The result is a little strile and the second photo is a better photo with nice graphic element to it.

He suggests that the contrasting colours here are just on the edge of contrasting. The red just being red enough. Below I have saturated the red some more but I still think as a contrasting colour arrangement its a little weak.

Here he say that it almost works as similar colours but that the green tends too much towards the yellow. I see that now. below is the same photo with the colours manipulated a little to achieve a closer result.

While he liked the potential of this photo he felt that the subject was too close to the edge of the frame and led the eye out of the picture. He suggests using the golden section.

Here I have moved the red flower in photoshop and the picture if improved.

He says the same about this.

Here I have again moved the pepper in photoshop and it has greatly improved it.

Project 50; Rain

I shot this project in Turin. I found it a great experience. Lots of new ideas came to mind while working on it. I shoot a lot of landscapes and so like dull cloudy weather. The amount of additional subjects in the rain was great. To mention just a few - the sheen on the pavements, people with umbrellas, rain drops in puddles and reflections in puddles.
I spent a lot of time at one particular pedestrian crossing because I was fascinated with the potential that the diagonal lines presented.
